Grower or shower?
Some cocks look big soft and barely change, others look modest and then double. Doctors have measured the difference, and the soft size turns out to be a poor preview

Every locker room has its rumours. The guy with the impressive soft cock must be huge when hard. The guy who looks tiny in the shower must be hiding something. Gay men have a word for each: showers look big soft and do not change much, growers look modest soft and then surprise everyone. It sounds like folklore, and partly it is, but it is also one of the few bits of locker room wisdom that doctors have actually measured.
What the averages say
On the clinic averages, a soft cock hanging normally is 9.2 cm3.6 in long and the same cock erect is 13.1 cm5.2 in, a gain of about 43%. Girth grows less, from 9.3 cm3.7 in to 11.7 cm4.6 in, about 25%. Those are averages of different groups of men, so they describe the typical gain, not any one cock. The interesting part is how much individual men vary around them.
Soft length on its own spreads out like this, which is why two men next to each other in a changing room can look so different:
| Category | Flaccid length | Men |
|---|---|---|
| Very small | under 5.2 cm2.1 in | 0.6% |
| Small | 5.2 cm2.1 in – 6.6 cm2.6 in | 4% |
| Below average | 6.6 cm2.6 in – 8.1 cm3.2 in | 20% |
| Average | 8.1 cm3.2 in – 10.2 cm4 in | 50% |
| Above average | 10.2 cm4 in – 11.7 cm4.6 in | 20% |
| Long | 11.7 cm4.6 in – 12.8 cm5 in | 4% |
| Very long | 12.8 cm5 in – 14 cm5.5 in | 0.9% |
| Huge | over 14 cm5.5 in | 0.1% |
Soft length, hanging, measured by a clinician. The bands are our own convention, drawn on the percentiles of the measured data, and they say little about the same cock erect
The study that counted them
In 2018 a team of American urologists measured 274 men before and after an injection that produces a full erection. The median gain in length was 4 cm1.6 in, with individual gains from 1 cm0.4 in to 7 cm2.8 in. Using 4 cm1.6 in as the dividing line, 26% of the men were growers, gaining 5.3 cm2.1 in on average, and 74% were showers, gaining 3.1 cm1.2 in.
The surprises were in what did not matter. Growers and showers had the same soft length. They did not differ by race, smoking or other illnesses. The growers were younger, on average about 48 against 56, and ended up longer when hard, 15.5 cm6.1 in against 13.1 cm5.2 in. Age was the only thing that predicted which group a man fell into.
The men in that study were urology patients with erectile problems, which is why they were getting injections in the first place, and they were mostly middle-aged. The split between growers and showers in younger, healthy men could be different. The cut-off of 4 cm1.6 in was simply the median of the group, not a law of nature.
A 2026 study of 420 men having an ultrasound scan of the penis went further. Instead of picking a cut-off, it let a statistical method sort the men into groups by how much they grew, and three patterns came out. The way a cock grows was linked with the behaviour of the tunica albuginea, the tough sheath wrapped around the erectile tissue, during an erection. In other words, grower and shower are not just a joke: they can be defined objectively, and they seem to come from how the tissue is built.
Soft size predicts very little
The practical conclusion is the one every grower already knows: the soft cock is a bad preview. In a classic study of 80 men, neither soft length nor age predicted erect length well; the best clue was stretched length, the soft cock pulled gently forward. An engineering study later found that the ratio between soft and stretched length was the best predictor of how much a cock lengthens. A cock that stretches a lot when pulled is a cock with room to grow.
Soft lengths are spread almost as widely as erect ones: two men in three hang between 7.6 cm3 in and 10.7 cm4.2 in, while two in three stand between 11.5 cm4.5 in and 14.8 cm5.8 in. If soft and hard size were tightly linked, the shortest soft cocks would also be the shortest hard ones. The measurements say they are not, which is the whole grower story in one sentence.
The same pattern shows up across whole populations. A 2025 analysis found that Chinese men have a shorter soft length than the global average but grow more on erection, 67% against 44%, so that their erect length ends up with no significant difference. Comparing soft cocks between countries, or between men in a sauna, says more about resting state than about the real thing.
Why soft size moves
A soft cock is not a fixed object, it is a resting state. The studies above agree that its size tells you little about the erect one, which is also why the same man can look like a shower one afternoon and a grower the next. The erect size is the one that the tables measure, and the one worth comparing. How an erection is built, and why hardness varies, is in Erection.
Some sites sell precise percentage thresholds for being a grower or a shower. They are not taken from any study we could find. The only defensible statement is the one above: in the clinic study the typical gain was around 4 cm1.6 in, anywhere from 1 cm0.4 in to 7 cm2.8 in, and you cannot tell which from the soft state.
Does it matter?
For dating, a little. A shower gets judged favourably in the changing room and then delivers roughly what he promised. A grower is underestimated until the moment it counts, which is the better order of events. In a culture where size is often judged from a photo or a glance at the gym, it is worth remembering that a soft picture tells you almost nothing.
For measuring, a lot. Only the erect numbers can be compared with the tables, which is why How to measure insists on a full erection, and why the size chart treats soft length as a curiosity rather than a score.
