Penis girth: how thick is average
Measured with a tape by doctors, the average erect cock is about 11.7 cm around. Here is what that means, how rare thick really is and why it matters more than length in bed

Length gets the bragging, girth gets the attention. Nobody leads a profile with his circumference, yet thickness is the number a mouth, a hand or an ass actually has to deal with. It is also the measurement men know least about their own cock, and the one studies have measured least often.
Girth is the distance around the shaft, not across it. Wrap a tape around an erect cock and the average reading, when a health professional holds the tape, is about 11.7 cm4.6 in. Soft, the same tape reads 9.3 cm3.7 in. Divide by pi and the average hard cock is roughly 3.7 cm1.5 in across, which is less dramatic than the word "thick" suggests.
The numbers, measured
The reference figures come from the same 2015 King's College review used for length on this site. Soft girth rests on 9,407 men, a solid number. Erect girth rests on only 381, because getting men hard in a clinic is slow, awkward and expensive. Larger pooled analyses published since land in the same place: a 2025 review of 33 clinician-measured studies found an erect girth of 11.9 cm4.7 in across 5,168 men, and a study of 778 Saudi urology patients with drug-induced erections found 11.5 cm4.5 in.
When men measure themselves at home, girth grows a little, like everything else. In a US sample of 1,661 men who measured themselves to order custom-fitted condoms, the average was 12.2 cm4.8 in, with answers ranging from 3 cm1.2 in to 19 cm7.5 in. The extremes tell you more about home measuring than about cocks.
How rare is thick
Girth varies less than length in absolute terms. Two men in three sit between about 10.6 cm4.2 in and 12.8 cm5 in around. From there the curve thins out fast:
| Erect girth | Share of men thicker | Roughly |
|---|---|---|
| 11.4 cm4.5 in | 58% | more than half |
| 12.7 cm5 in | 17% | 1 in 6 |
| 14 cm5.5 in | 1.8% | 1 in 56 |
| 15.2 cm6 in | 0.06% | 1 in 1,800 |
These are computed from a bell curve fitted to the clinic averages, not counts of real men, and the spread behind them comes from those 381 erections. Take the bottom row as a rough order of magnitude.
Put the same numbers into bands and girth looks like this:
| Category | Erect girth | Men |
|---|---|---|
| Very thin | under 8.9 cm3.5 in | 0.6% |
| Thin | 8.9 cm3.5 in – 9.9 cm3.9 in | 4% |
| Below average | 9.9 cm3.9 in – 10.9 cm4.3 in | 20% |
| Average | 10.9 cm4.3 in – 12.4 cm4.9 in | 50% |
| Above average | 12.4 cm4.9 in – 13.5 cm5.3 in | 20% |
| Thick | 13.5 cm5.3 in – 14.2 cm5.6 in | 4% |
| Very thick | 14.2 cm5.6 in – 15.1 cm5.9 in | 0.9% |
| Extreme | over 15.1 cm5.9 in | 0.1% |
Erect girth, measured around the shaft. The bands are our own convention, drawn on the percentiles of the measured data: there is no medical definition of thin or thick
Thickness adds up faster than length. Volume grows with the square of girth, so a cock 10% thicker than another of the same length holds about 21% more, while a cock 10% longer holds 10% more. The 90th percentile girth in the drawing above has a cross-section a quarter bigger than the average one. That is why an inch of girth feels like much more than an inch.
Where you put the tape
Studies do not agree on where girth is taken. Some wrap the tape at the base, some at mid-shaft, some just below the head, and some, like a 2000 study that modelled how cocks expand, measured both base and tip. On a straight, even shaft the difference is small. On a cock that tapers toward the head, or swells in the middle, it is not, so two numbers for the same man can both be honest. The site uses mid-shaft as the default, as explained in How to measure, and the different silhouettes are in Shape.
Girth is also hard to measure well even when you try. In a study of 312 gay men who measured their partner's erection with an unmarked paper strip, twice, three months apart, the average girth barely moved, 12.5 cm4.9 in then 12.6 cm5 in, but individual readings agreed poorly between the two sessions. A cock is soft tissue, erections vary in firmness from one night to the next, and a strip can be pulled snug or loose. Measure a few times and keep the average.
Soft girth, hard girth
Erections add less to girth than to length. On the clinic averages a cock goes from 9.3 cm3.7 in to 11.7 cm4.6 in around, a gain of about 25%, while length grows by about 43%. Thickness when soft says little about thickness when hard, for the same reasons explained in Grower or shower: the soft state is a resting position, not a preview.
What girth changes in bed
Here the gay data are more useful than anything else in the literature. Among 463 gay and bisexual men in New York, those who reported bigger cocks were more likely to say standard condoms felt too tight, that they struggled to find one that fit, and that condoms had broken on them. Two thirds of these men had measured their girth at some point, which is more than most surveys could say.
Condom makers size for the middle of the curve. Trojan describes its standard condoms as having a nominal width of 2 to 2.2 inches, measured flat, and suggests a larger size for a girth over 5 inches, which on the clinic numbers is about one man in six. A condom that is too tight is uncomfortable and more likely to split; one that is too loose can slip. If you are thick, a size up is not vanity, it is engineering.
In a survey of over a thousand men who have sex with men, those who rated themselves above average reported more herpes and HPV infections than the others, even though their condom use was no different. Nobody proved why, but condoms that slip or break are an obvious suspect. The practical side of thickness, from the receiving end, is covered in How to suck a thick cock, and the link between size and who tops is in Size, tops and bottoms.
