What predicts penis size
Hands, feet, height, nose and passport: researchers have measured most of the famous clues, and none of them is good enough to guess what is in a man's pants

Big hands, big feet, big nose, tall guy: the internet has a predictor for every body part except the one you want to see. It is a fun game on a first date and a useless one in a clinic. When researchers line up cocks next to shoes, fingers and heights, most of the famous clues vanish, and the ones that survive are too weak to bet on.
Shoes and feet
The most quoted myth has been tested directly. Two urologists measured the stretched length of 104 men and compared it with their shoe size, and found no significant link at all. A small 1993 study of 63 men reportedly found a statistical connection between stretched length, height and foot length, but one too weak to be any use for estimating size.
So the man in size 46 shoes is, on the evidence, exactly as likely to be average as anyone else. He just needs bigger shoes.
Height
Height is the predictor with the most support, and it is still a weak one. The 2015 King's College review found that the most consistent correlation in the literature was between length, stretched or erect, and height, with correlation coefficients between 0.2 and 0.6 depending on the study. In a study of 144 Korean men, height was the only body measure that predicted soft length, with a correlation of about 0.19.
A correlation of 0.2 or 0.3 sounds like something and means very little in practice. It is the kind of link that shows up when you average thousands of men, and disappears when you look at the one in front of you. Tall men are on average very slightly longer; plenty of tall men are average, and plenty of short men are not.
Hands and fingers
Overall hand size has never been shown to predict anything. The finger ratio is a more interesting story. In the same Korean study, the ratio between the index and the ring finger was the only significant predictor of stretched length: men whose ring finger was longer relative to the index tended to be longer. That ratio is thought to be a rough marker of the testosterone a man was exposed to before birth. A later study of 248 Korean men also found the finger ratio among the predictors of erect length.
Before you start measuring fingers at the bar: the correlation in the first study was about 0.2, the samples were small and from one country, and nobody has turned it into a reliable test.
The nose. Despite centuries of jokes, we found no study worth citing that measured noses and cocks in the same men. The same goes for thumbs, ears and the size of a man's car.
Weight and age
Weight does not change how big a cock is, but it changes how much of it you can see. The pad of fat above the base covers the first part of the shaft. In 778 men, those with a higher body mass index tended to have a shorter skin-to-tip length, and the gap between skin-to-tip and bone-pressed length averaged 1.8 cm0.7 in. Losing weight will not grow a cock, but it can uncover one.
Age, once a man is an adult, predicts surprisingly little. In a study of 80 men, age did not predict erect length. It may affect how much a cock grows on erection: in a clinic study, younger men were more often growers.
Ethnicity and country
This is where the internet gets loudest and the data get thinnest. Clinician-measured reviews do find differences between regional averages: one 2023 analysis reported erect lengths from about 11.7 cm4.6 in in Asian studies to about 15.7 cm6.2 in in the few from Oceania, with Europe, the Americas and Africa in between.
But each region rests on a handful of studies that measured in different ways, some on patients, some on volunteers, some with injections, some by stretching. A 2025 meta-analysis focused on Chinese men found them shorter when soft but with no significant difference in erect length compared with a global reference, because they grew more on erection. The viral maps that rank countries by size mostly mix self-reported web surveys with clinic studies and different methods, which makes the rankings meaningless. And even the biggest gap between regional averages is smaller than the range you find among the men of any single region.
The same caution applies to the question every gay man has heard asked: whether gay men themselves are bigger. The only large study is old, self-reported and never replicated, and it has its own page in Are gay men bigger?
So what does predict size?
Mostly, the size itself. No body part, no finger, no shoe and no passport gives you more than a slight hint. If you want to know, the only reliable method is a ruler, a full erection and the method in How to measure. If you want to guess, the safest bet for any man you meet is the average in Length, because that is what most men are.
