Cam boy

A cam boy is a man who performs live on a webcam for money: he strips, jerks off, fucks a toy or a partner, chats and teases, while viewers watch in real time and pay him in tips or private shows. "Boy" here is the porn industry's usual flattery, not an age: cam boys are adult men, from fresh-faced twinks to hairy daddies in their fifties.

What makes a cam boy different from a porn star is the live part. He is not following a script on a set; he is reading the chat, answering requests, remembering regulars by name, and keeping a room entertained for hours. The good ones are part performer, part bartender, part therapist.

How camming works

Camming is a full sex work industry of its own, with performers all over the world: sociologist Angela Jones gathered the voices of more than 500 of them for the first book written about it. The model is simple. A cam boy goes live on a cam site, the public room is free to watch, and money comes from tips, often bought as site tokens, plus paid private or group shows. Many set tip goals on screen: so many tokens and the shirt comes off, so many more and he cums.

Jones's research also shows that it is not only about the money: performers talk about intimacy, community and their own pleasure as part of the job. Plenty of cam boys simply like being watched.

Cam boy, content creator, porn star

The lines blur. A lot of cam boys also sell clips and pictures, run an OnlyFans, or shoot the odd collab, which makes them content creators as well. Some studio performers cam between shoots, and some cam boys get noticed and signed by a studio. The word describes what he is doing at that moment: live, on camera, with a chat scrolling next to him.

Careful

A cam room feels intimate, but it is still work. Tipping buys a show, not a boyfriend, and recording or reposting a private show without consent is a quick way to get banned and to hurt someone's income.

On the apps and beyond

"Cam boy" is also used loosely for any guy who does solo shows online, paid or not, and some men put it in their profiles to explain why their face looks familiar. It is a neutral, even proud word among performers, and most of them would rather be called that than anything ruder.
