Exclusive

An exclusive is a porn performer under contract to one studio, who agrees to appear only in its scenes for a set period. The word is used as a noun ("he's a Falcon exclusive") and as a label on the sites, where "exclusive model" means you will not find him anywhere else. For fans it is a promise; for the performer it is a job with a steady paycheck and a leash.

Exclusive can also describe content: an exclusive scene is one shot for a single site and not sold to others. But when gay men talk about exclusives, they almost always mean the men.

How it works

A studio spots a model, often after a solo or a casting scene, and offers him a contract: a number of scenes over months or a year, sometimes a fixed fee, sometimes a retainer. In return he cannot shoot for competitors, and often cannot post explicit content of his own. The studio builds a brand around him, with his own page, photo shoots and a carefully planned story: first solo, first duo, first time bottoming.

Why studios want them

An exclusive is a studio's way of owning a face. In the days of video, a star under contract sold boxes, and the big studios built their names on men fans could only see there. The model becomes part of the brand, and the brand becomes the place to watch him. That is why studios guard their exclusives and announce new ones like signings in football.

Exclusives in the creator era

The rise of OnlyFans and content creators has changed the deal. A popular performer can now earn more on his own than under contract, so many exclusives are shorter, looser or allow the man to keep his own page. Many performers move in a familiar cycle: amateur, studio exclusive, then independent creator doing collabs with whoever he likes.

The old prestige has not completely gone. Being chosen as an exclusive still means a studio bet money on you, and some fans still follow a studio mainly to see who it signs next. But for most of today's performers exclusivity is a stage in a career, not the whole career.
