Dad bod

A solid, slightly soft male body, with some muscle, a small belly and no six-pack: in gay slang a popular, relaxed type, whatever the man's age.

Dad bod

A dad bod is a body that is solid and a bit soft: some muscle from a gym habit that comes and goes, a small belly, love handles, no six-pack in sight. Not fat, not ripped, just a regular, comfortable male body that likes beer and pizza and occasionally goes for a run. The man does not have to be a father, or even old: the "dad" is about the look.

In gay slang it has become a type in its own right, and a popular one. A lot of gay men are tired of chasing abs, their own or anyone else's, and the dad bod is the relaxed alternative: a body you can actually hug, that looks like it eats dinner.

Where it comes from

The phrase went mainstream in spring 2015. A college student, Mackenzie Pearson, wrote an essay called "Why Girls Love the Dad Bod" for The Odyssey, a college-focused website, describing it as "a nice balance between a beer gut and working out", and the internet ran with it. Slate interviewed her as "America's leading expert" within weeks. She did not claim to have invented the phrase; she said a friend had pointed it out to her.

So the word started out straight, about what young women supposedly wanted. Gay men picked it up too, and it fit right in, because we already had a long tradition of loving bodies that were not gym-built, from the bears onward.

"Into dad bods. If you skip leg day and order dessert, we'll get along."A Grindr bio with priorities.

Dad bod, daddy, bear

Easy to mix up, but different. A daddy is about age and attitude: an older man, often protective or in charge, whatever his body. A dad bod is about the body, whatever the age: a guy of 28 can have one. A bear is bigger and hairier, with a culture and community of his own; a dad bod can be smooth and has no club to join. A chub is heavier still. Of course, a daddy with a dad bod is a combination many men find hard to resist.

How it is used today

On the apps, men use it both as a self-description, often with a self-deprecating grin, and as a type they want. It sits in a wider shift toward more ordinary bodies in gay culture, against the gym-and-filter standard of Instagram. In porn, "dad bod" is a tag for real-looking, everyday men, often in amateur content and on creator platforms like OnlyFans.

In real life

Plenty of men discovered they had a dad bod the day the phrase went viral, and were delighted to find out it was a compliment.
