Leather daddy

An older, experienced and usually dominant gay man in the leather scene, who often mentors and looks after a younger partner, his boy or pup.

A leather daddy is an older gay man in the leather scene, usually experienced, usually dominant, and often the one who guides and looks after a younger partner. Picture the boots, the chaps, the harness or the full leather jacket, the cap, the gray beard and the calm authority of a man who has been around the scene for decades.

He is a daddy in the full sense of the word: not only older, but a figure of experience and protection. In leather culture that role is taken seriously. A leather daddy may have a boy, or a pup, whom he mentors, trains and takes care of, inside a relationship built on trust and clear rules. The boy in question is an adult man; the words describe roles, not ages.

Where it comes from

The leather words are older than this one. Green's Dictionary of Slang has the leather boy from 1961, the leather bar from 1963, in John Rechy's City of Night, and the leather queen from 1967. Leather daddy turns up in its citations from 1998, in a list of gay types, though the figure itself is as old as the scene.

The scene also built its own institutions. International Mr. Leather, one of the best-known leather contests, was first held in Chicago in 1979, growing out of a contest at Chuck Renslow's Gold Coast bar. Its stage has been a showcase for exactly the kind of man the word describes.

More than a look

Anyone can buy a harness. What makes a leather daddy is the role: knowledge of the scene, its codes (the hanky code among them), its safety rules and its etiquette, and the habit of passing all of it on. In the old leather world, newcomers learned from older men, and the daddy was the teacher. Many still see it that way.

How it is used today

At leather bars, fetish events and on kink apps, leather daddy is both a self-label and a type, often paired with boys and pups. Outside the scene people use it more loosely for any older man in leather gear, and in porn it is a staple of fetish porn. Inside the scene, the word still carries respect: you earn it.
