Muscle bear
A bear who lifts: a big, hairy, bearded gay man whose bulk is mostly muscle, built more like a powerlifter than a bodybuilder.

A muscle bear is a bear who lifts. Big, hairy and bearded like any bear, but the bulk is mostly muscle: thick arms, broad chest, heavy legs, and usually a bit of belly left over, because he is still a bear and not a fitness model. Think powerlifter rather than bodybuilder.
He sits at the crossroads of two gay worlds that used to look at each other with suspicion: the bear scene, which celebrated natural bodies and hair, and gym culture, which celebrated definition and a shaved chest. The muscle bear takes the size from the gym and keeps the fur from the bears.
Where it comes from
Bear, for a hairy, beefy gay man, is in print by 1979. Bear culture prized an everyday, unpolished masculinity over the groomed and the effeminate, and early on that often meant natural bodies rather than gym-made ones. Over the years the gym came back in, and the hairy man with real muscle got his own label. The compound is transparent, muscle plus bear, and we have not found a reliable first date for it, so we will not invent one.
Muscle bear, wolf, gym bunny
- A muscle bear is heavy, hairy and strong, with size first and definition second.
- A wolf is hairy and fit but leaner, with less bulk.
- A gym bunny is about the gym habit and the look, often smooth and defined, and rarely furry.
- A plain muscle guy can be smooth or hairy: the word says nothing about the hair.
How it is used today
As a self-label on bear apps and as a well-worn tag in bear porn, where the hairy, beefy, muscled performer is a category of his own. At bear events, muscle bears are the ones in the tank tops even in winter. A younger version is sometimes jokingly called a muscle cub, and an older, gray-haired one is a muscle daddy.
The muscle bear is the bear world's answer to its own critics: proof that you can be big and hairy and still spend your evenings at the squat rack.
