History of Gay Porn tells the story of how men have pictured desire between men, from the painted pottery of ancient Athens to the films, magazines and websites of the last hundred years.

The site is organised in chapters, one for each era, and in shorter in-depth pages about single works, people and court cases. Every date is collected in the timeline, and every page lists the books and studies it is based on at the bottom.

How we write

We write about the past as history, not as fantasy. Where an institution of the time involved relationships that would be unacceptable today, we describe it for what it was and we do not use those images to illustrate the site.

We only name people who worked in adult media under a stage name by that name, and we only report what has already been documented in books, interviews or court records.

Images

Most of the works of art shown on the site come from museum collections released into the public domain. Other images come from archives and collections that allow their use, and each one is credited in its caption.
